I have worked with youth for over a decade now. I have volunteered with youth who have emotional problems, drug addictions, depression, abuse in their families and other serious issues.

The youth of this world are our future and if we don't teach them genuine love and show them how to love others, our future is indeed bleak.

I have found that a well run, morally grounded summer camp has more positive effect on youth than any other programs I have seen (and I've been part of quite a few).

You see, some kids are so scarred and hurt by their upbringing or other circumstances that you can't really touch their hearts in just one day or even over a weekend. You have to get them away from their normal environment and over several days, the layers of pride, ego and pain begin to peel away and only then can you get them to accept your love and instruction. 

Unfortunately, the kids who need summer camp the most are typically the ones who can least afford it. 

I have been a volunteer for Higher Ground Summer Camp in South Carolina and this year I would like to bring a handful of needy community children to the camp. Not only can we love them and serve them at camp, when we get home I can keep that connection going and hopefully continue to serve and mentor them throughout their school years.

The tuition for Higher Ground summer camp, which is a premier one-week residential camp in the foothills of the Blue Ridge Mountains is only $295. Cheap by camp standards, but prohibitive to those living near the poverty line.
