CUSTOM WOOD FLOORS

I really love the look of Brazilian Cherry wood floors but when I asked my builder how much it would cost to upgrade from Red Oak, he said it would be $5000. Ouch!

I didn't want to spend that much to upgrade so I came up with a different solution. I would have the oak floors stained to look like Brazilian Cherry.

That was a wonderful idea but it took a lot of work on my part. Minwax is the biggest player in the wood stain business but despite having names like *Mahogany* for their stains, none of the dark stains I did test samples with gave that dark, rich look or Brazilian Cherry or Honduras Mahogany that I was desiring.

I went to the web and unfortunately I didnt come up with any better solutions. On a whim, I went to the local Sherwin Williams paint store and found the answer to my problem.  They have a stain called Modern Mahogany and it gives the dark, rich look that we desired.

The floor guys were a bit hesitant about putting it on the oak floors as they had never done so with that stain before but after it was all done everyone was raving about the floors and were shocked that they were ordinary red oak underneath.

The one drawback is that when the floors get scraped as they certainly will, the lighter wood will show underneath, but you can buy wood marker pens to quickly cover up the problem.
