Building Our Custom Home

BUILDING ON A THEME

I have had the opportunity to tour through many amazing homes in many different countries in my lifetime. One thing that sets great homes apart from the rest is the overall impression that everything was given a lot of thought and not just pieced together.

One way to make your house feel truly custom and well thought out is to have a theme or a special element throughout.  In some of the grander homes I have seen, craftsmen not only carved the woodwork in the home, but they made the furniture to match.

At the Biltmore house in Asheville, North Carolina, you can see Mr. Vanderbilt's initials as a repeated theme at Biltmore, both inside and out.

We decided that at Ashland Hall we would use a heraldic lion as a theme. There is one in carved stone on the front of the house, a lion doorbell at the front door and then several more throughout the home. You have to be careful not to overdo it or your home will look more like a theme park than a castle.

A secondary theme throughout the house and gardens is a *heart*. Some are very apparent while others would take a bit of effort to find.
