Building Our Custom Home

BUILDING WITH E-BAY

When we decided that we were going to have a custom home built, we decided that it was going to truly be custom. We would incorporate designs and elements into the house that you won't see in other homes. One way of doing that was searching for items online.

Another benefit of using the Internet to make house purchases is that you can potentially save a lot of money.

E-Bay is a fabulous place to look for architectural pieces for the home. However, you might want to begin searching months in advance of when you might need the items since it could be a while before the perfect piece comes up for bid.

You can use E-Bays "Favorite Searches" feature and they will email you updates items that you are searching for each day. You can search as broad or as limited as you desire.

I have purchased some great things online so far: antique front doors, vessel sinks, faucets, home and garden magazines for design ideas, a professional gas range (saved $3000) and my newest purchase, a 100 year old Victorian newel post which will grace our front stairs.

It took me some time before I realized that there were auction "Sniping" programs out there that you can purchase which makes your bidding a whole lot easier. I used to sit around the computer waiting to put in my bid seconds before an auction ended but the sniping programs will do it all for you. Just put in your maximum bid and when you want it to enter the bid for you and you don't have worry about it.

Be mindful that with Internet purchases that it is not as good as being able to examine the item in person but most sellers are very upfront about the condition of the pieces you are buying. But sometimes things can get damaged in the mail. So don't wait until the last minute to do your Internet shopping.
