CAST IN STONE

January 10, 2006 Update

Do you want your house to stand out of the crowd and look like a million bucks? Consider including cast stone surrounds in your plans.

Many European manors have used limestone or sandstone surrounds and elements for centuries. It was the mark of grandeur.

Now companies in the U.S. (and elsewhere) have learned to simulate the look and feel by using concrete made out of crushed stone (cast stone). Additionally, I have seen these surrounds mimicked with stucco although I am not a big fan of that technique.

Not only did we put these cast stone surrounds on our front windows and around our entry, we ordered a cast stone plaque of a heraldic lion to be inset as well like you would see on many European buildings.

The stonework probably adds about $50,000 to the value of the house although they didn't cost nearly that much to buy and install. The best website I have seen is for the Stone Legends company. They have lots of decorative pieces too.

Everyone who has seen the stone surrounds on the house has been very impressed. But shhhh!  Just don't let the secret out or everyone will be getting them.
