BE A DIM WIT

Everyone knows that certain types of lighting are more romantic. Dim the lights and suddenly the mood changes.

Dimmers also have other purposes. For example, when the baby is asleep in our room we can turn the bathroom lights on at their dimmest setting and not have to worry about the bright light waking her up.

Who wants to a Las Vegas light show in the bathroom first thing in the morning? A dim light is all I need for brushing my teeth and using the toilet.  After my eyes have adjusted then I can up the volume for shaving (and putting on make up for her).

But a really important benefit of having lights on dimmers are the potential energy savings. On and off don't give me all the options I want. There are many times that putting the lights on mid-way is plenty bright enough and had I put them on full power, I would be wasting both the bulb and the energy it consumes.

Although it is costing us an extra $15 per switch (if you have 3-way switches you only use one dimmer unless you get the super expensive kind), we are putting practically every light in the house on a dimmer. In the long term it will save us in bulbs and on our utility bill and in the short term, it is simply romantic and cool.
