| LAND CLEARING - BEFORE AND AFTER PHOTOS Our house plans have come back from engineering and have been submitted to the city. We hope to receive the permit in 2-4 weeks and then the "real" construction will begin. As I mentioned in a previous update, we had about 1/3 acre of woods thinned out for a future woodland garden. This past week we had four dump truck loads of mulch delivered to our property. Instead of paying a landscaping company to spread it, we offered the same funds to our church youth group as a fundraiser for them. This past Sunday about 20 kids and adults from church spread mulch throughout our woodland garden to help keep the weeds from popping up while we construct. Here are some photos of the process. 1. Photo before we thinned out the forest. Notice the trees marked with red and green tape that we wanted to save.
2. We had a company come in and clear away the pines, holly trees, undergrowth and other trees we didn't want.
3. After it was cleared we brought in 80 cubic yards (4 dump truck loads) of mulch to create a more park-like appearance and to help keep the weeds from invading too quickly. This will give a good base for a natural covering to form as the leaves fall over the years. This fall we plan on planting azaleas, hostas, rhododendrons, camelias and other part-shade plants. We will add paths, benches and other things to create this garden which will become more shady as the trees branch out.
