Building Our Custom Home |
| SCREW IT! It is a lot faster and easier to put in a nail than it is to put in a screw. The reverse is also true. It is easier for a nail to pop out than a screw. We know that from personal experience. Our current home is about 35 years old and in many of the walls you can see where the drywall nails are slightly popping out. And over the years we have had quite a few squeaky floors which we eventually fixed by putting screws in the sub floors. When the sheetrock was going up in our new home we noticed that they were nailing down the perimeter and screwing in the rest. We put a quick stop to that. We insisted that only screws be used. Later on one of the workers came up to me and said "in all my years of doing this you are the first smart person to insist that we only use screws." We have a painter friend who also told us to be sure they screw in the drywall. He has seen a lot of problems over the years with drywall nails. Screwing the sub floors not helps prevent those oh so annoying squeaks but it strengthens the overall stability of the floors. It was important enough that I even wrote it into our contract to make sure it was done. If it was reasonable to have the entire framing screwed together, we'd go for that too. And if you ever put in a wood deck, screws are an absolute must. ************** Time Lapse Photos of the Construction
