Building Our Custom Home

WHY SO LONG?

A typical 3000 square foot house should take just about the same amount of time to complete as another. But often there is a huge difference in how much time they take. A striking example is whey you see a house on TV being constructed in less than 2 weeks compared to the typical 6 months or so of construction. Why is that?

I have heard stories of houses taking 18 months to two years to be completed. The long time isn't because the construction was overly complicated. It almost always has to do with scheduling.

For example, a perfectly scheduled house might take 5 months to complete but in reality it takes 8 months. But no house can be perfectly scheduled (where every day their is good progress being made).

It is not unusual for construction to completely halt for a week or more simply because the next contractor due is still on another job. I personally had to wait 3 weeks additional weeks for the septic system to be put in (which held up my landscaping) because the septic installer was backed up with work.

On other occasions I had a pipe that got damaged during the hanging of the sheetrock and that room couldn't be complete until the pipe was fixed, which took over a week because the crew was on another job.

Don't expect your house to be a beehive of activity from day one until the competition. In fact, relish in the slower moments to catch your breath or even do a thorough inspection (and write notes) on what has been done to date.
