One year I came home for Christmas to vacation with my family and had to leave my new boyfriend behind.  He was going to be spending those next two weeks working, even over the holiday, so I wanted to leave him with something special.  I went to the general store and bought 11 small gifts, each no more than $1 or $2. Then I wrapped them all up individually, numbered them from the day I'd be leaving to Dec. 25, and put them in a gift bag. The result: a homemade Advent calendar! He'd remember me each day I was away. The gesture meant so much to him; he genuinely loved the idea. I think it's going to be a future tradition!
