One time I made a scavenger hunt with photos.  I took a photo of the first clue (a tree) and then proceeded to hide a photo at each photo's clue until the last photo was found.  

At the last photo, I had hidden a photo of the actual gift, a brand new toolbox my husband had wanted.  Some of the photos included the tree, our van, a rock, our mailbox and of course the toolbox. He had a great time anticipating the last photo and what the gift would be.  This worked well since the gift was large and I couldn't wrap it without him guessing what it was.
